My husband and I love national parks, and were very excited to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park! This trip involved a long day of travel, but was totally worth it if you enjoy visiting national parks. Our tour guide Mel was very informative, sharing information about the island the whole ride to/from the park. We made a few stops along the way to tour a coffee plantation, a few beaches, and lunch at the Punalu'u Bake Shop. It was delicious! Be prepared for a full day of being on the road & flying if you are coming from Kauai.

My tour was very informative but the driver Johnny was very rude and speaks in a disrespectful manner not minding there are kids on board.

I literally could not be more disappointed. We came to Hawaii specifically to see the volcano. It was a surprise birthday gift to my husband. I was told by Jason at Sunshine tours that it would take 2-2.5 hours to get Volcanoes National Park from our pickup location which would include a stop at a Kona Coffee plantation and lunch. Then we would have 5+ hours at the park before heading back. This was totally untrue!
It took us over 6 hours on a bus to get to the volcano because of all the 10-15 minutes stops we made along the way! Then, when we did get to the volcano, we had about an hour to hop on and off the bus at a few different locations and then it was back on the bus to leave for the drive back. Even with all that, the office had scheduled our flight too tightly and we missed our flight out of Kona. Our driver got us rescheduled on another flight an hour later and thankfully we made that one (barely), but sadly two other couples who were on the tour with us did not b/c they couldn’t get through security in time (not TSA’s fault, just too tight a schedule!)
I saved for years for this trip, and since I’d never been to Hawaii I let “experts” guide me on what tour to take. BIG mistake. If you want to spend over 10 hours on a bus with a friendly, outgoing driver who tells you lots of things about the Big Island, this is for you; but if you want to actually spend some time and see the volcanoes, don’t do it! Just rent a car and drive there. There are wonderful park rangers who can give you the best information. Unfortunately, we did not have time to stop and listen to them, or to do any of the things they suggested. Disappointed is not a strong enough word for this experience.
