The National Archaeological Museum of Naples is a precious treasure chest ranging from the collection of finds from Magna Grecia, to the first Egyptian collection opened in a modern museum, to the monumental collection of statues of the Farnese family, with the Hercules and the imposing group del Toro, ending with the spectacular display of the thousands of finds excavated from 1738 in the cities of Ercolano, Pompei, Stabia, Oplonti: mosaics, objects of everyday life, the erotic objects of the surprising secret Cabinet, the frescoes, which will bring us back back in time to 79 AD, the year in which Vesuvius destroyed the cities around its perimeter. And all of this is inserted in the majestic seventeenth-century palace, which today faces the end of one of the most important arteries of the historic center of Naples.

While there's no denying that the archaeological museum is interesting and has some unique finds, the price is absurd for the size of the museum. The museum looks quite large, but it really takes only an hour to get through it all, which is definitely not worth the 22 euro tickets.

We didn’t know much about this Museum which is a sad reflection on us as it is truly amazing and makes a visit to Naples worthwhile - along with the pizza at Pizzeria Brandi!

May appear daunting but my word it is a treasure trove of wonderful statues, frescoes etcetra many from Pompeii -- especially love the portrait of the baker and his wife -- and even the naughty room....exhibits judged pornographic by the Bourbon ruler at the time and yes some are rather shall we say in your face but they are of their time and all in all nothing to get upset about. Beautifully presented, maybe lacking in staff around the museum to guide you better but then it is nice to wander and come upon unexpected diamonds...not literally of course!!!

Great exhibition! The audio guide in German is almost not worth it, as there is no information for most of the exhibition. It is also unbelievable that there are plastic cups and plates even in the museum cafeteria...

If you are interested in the archaeology of the area, this museum is an absolute must. The presentation of an outstanding area of artefacts, mosaics, statues and frescoes is brilliantly done and the information about each piece lets you place it fully in context of its original location and discovery. If visiting Pompeii or Herculaneum, coming here before or after you go will truly increase your appreciation of the artistry, magnificence and craftsmanship of the earlier inhabitants of campania. It also has a good cafe for when you need to sit and rest. Plus there is an AV show that shows what Pompeii looked like pre-eruption that manages not to be cheesy at all. Well worth a visit.

This museum is full of treasures and a must visit if in Naples. We particularly enjoyed the mosaics (E1.50 extra) and the adults only pictures and sculptures. However, this museum is HUGE. It is far too big to see in one day and at the point where we gave up it took us 10 minutes just to walk back to the entrance. It is a great pity they do not offer week tickets for the same price, as it would be much better to see a bit each day over two or three days, or it is just overwhelming. When you visit read it up in your guide book, decide which parts particularly interest you and concentrate on those.

The museum houses a beautiful collection of statues, frescoes and mosaics. It allows an attentive visitor a truly unique experience. It's a shame that in this hot summer there is no type of air conditioning, which is instead present in other similar Italian and foreign structures. I am thinking for example of the Valle Giulia museum in Rome or the Archaeological Museum in Athens or the Ancient History Museum in Jerusalem. Visiting the museum with 35 degrees in the rooms, suffering and sweating like armadillos in the sun, is truly inconceivable given the far from modest ticket price. Equally unforgivable is the state of cleanliness, so to speak, of the men's bathrooms. Worse than those of the worst central stations I visited. Very few guards in the rooms, from the air he also faces them, poor things, due to the heat they have to endure for the entire working hours. As an Italian Piero of our works of art and the beauty of our cities, I confess that I was a little ashamed.
