CANCELLATION POLICY

I traveled to Mexico in September 2024 and had a frustrating and unfair experience with customs.

If you’re traveling to Mexico, be extremely cautious about how many electronics you bring, and don’t expect any leniency, even when following the rules. This whole experience has been an unfortunate and costly lesson about how Mexico treats tourists at customs.

My wife and I have been to Cancun 10 times in the last five years and never been treated like this.

I was fined $212 because I had two iPads, which the customs officer claimed was over the allowed limit for personal electronics. However, I did not violate any rules—one of the iPads belonged to my wife, who had stepped outside to arrange our shuttle. Despite explaining this to the officer, they refused to listen and insisted on issuing the fine.

Warning for American Travelers: Even if you’re within the rules, Mexican customs can still fine you for carrying multiple electronics. There’s no due process—once they’ve decided to fine you, there’s no arguing. I’ve been trying for weeks to resolve this issue with the Mexican customs, the US Consular’s office, and PREFECO (who is supposed to help with tourist issues but does not even return emails or calls).

It’s clear this is simply a revenue source for them. You won’t get a fair hearing or any meaningful help in contesting the fine.
