Iaido is a martial art that was practiced by samurai as a practice, and has established itself as an ancient Japanese martial art in modern times. Trial cutting is practice to learn how to swing a sword that can cut. Such a trial cutting experience (cutting a tatami mat seriously) is a very popular plan where you can experience the feeling of a samurai.

Great experience for the whole family. I would highly recommend the experience. They were great with photo opportunities for everyone and patient when it took me extra time to get the sword movements correct. Heads up…you can NOT be a left handed samurai!

This was a wonderful highlight of our trip to Japan. My teens wanted to do this before we left and I depend on Viator for multiple experiences throughout our travels. The place is on a quiet residential street so give yourself enough time to get there. We opted for an Uber since there was five of us. It’s unassuming from the outside but when you step in there is a wall lined with ornate Samurai regalia, very beautiful. The teacher (Master) was such a great instructor. He led with grace but was firm with his presence and commanded much respect. You get to cut the mats twice after learning the correct way to do it, then he gives a fabulous demonstration. I highly recommend anyone this experience!

The instructors were very serious about this form of art and gave my young adult children and myself a lesson in samurai sword cutting and an experience that we won't forget. We were given a chance to use a sword to cut a rolled-up bamboo mat which was exhilarating!! This is a must-do while in Tokyo.

This was a nice experience from the beginning! We were dressed in traditional clothes and taught how to clear the mind, hold a sword, and different strikes one might use on an opponent. A great idea for young adults and teens!

A great educational experience. A hands on event that showed the strong culture need of concentration and skill. Getting to use the ancient swords was very powerful. I had three children aged 12, 17, 29 and myself. Very genuine experience and lovely organisers. Highly recommend.

It has been a success to have had this experience on our trip to Japan. 100% recommendable.
The session was very enjoyable and we learned a lot in a very short time. Positions, terms, exercises and, of course, making the cuts on the tatami.
The people at the activity also make it really entertaining and fun.
