• Please provide the full names of all travelers when booking. Failure to present a voucher with all travelers' full names at the ticket office prior to entry may result in denied entry to the Colosseum and Roman Forum.
• The tour reservations have strict timing. To join the tour you are required to be at the meeting point for check-in at least 30 minutes prior to your tour departure time.
• If you arrive late for the meeting time, it will not be possible to join the group or reschedule, unless you pay for the activity again. As per "No Show" rules you will not be entitled to a refund.
• Please provide an active phone number during the booking process in order to be contacted about last minute changing.
• Pets are not allowed inside the venue
• Every participant MUST bring an id or a photo of it. It is mandatory requested by the monument in order to enter the Colosseum Underground.
• Each traveler must present a valid passport or ID document that matches the name provided at the time of booking for successful entry to the Colosseum and Roman Forum.

Great information about the history of the Colosseum. But we did not get to see the underground, as that portion was cancelled. The tour guide was a little hard to follow as she did not carry a flag like the other guides did.

Really loved the tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable, personable, and fun! Really impressed with the colosseum and the tunnel that the Gladiators would walk to get to the arena. Awe inspiring to walk the same floors as those used by such brave men in the first century. Highly recommend this company as well as our guide!

This was a really unfortunate experience, and I want to separate facts from my opinions.

(facts)

I booked this tour several weeks ahead of time, and really wanted to go.

I was travelling by cruise ship, and planned to take the train from Civitavecchia to Rome.

A few days before the date, the tour operator informed me the tour I booked was cancelled, and they offered me a different discounted tour. Trying to make the best of things, I agreed.

At about 9 pm the night before the ship was scheduled to dock in Civitavecchia, we were informed there was a one-day national train strike the day we were to go to Rome.

This became a very questionable situation, since even if we could get there, it was very unclear if we could get back and literally miss the boat. Missing the boat turns a minor problem into a huge problem, as I was taking my 80+ year-old father with me. Uber and taxi prices spike during a train strike, if they are even available at all.

In the end, I didn’t take the risk and avoided Rome that day.

I did get a partial refund because the operator switched the tour on me, but was still charged the full amount of the replacement tour.

The operator says it’s not their fault/problem that I was unable to make it to the tour. Which I agree is technically correct…

… But that customer service approach also earns you a 1-star review. The circumstances here are really unusual, with my original booked tour being cancelled, and then a snap 1-day train strike that day. Very bad luck.

I had hoped, and really expected, that given the tour I actually booked was *cancelled by the operator*, and an out-of-the-blue strike prevented me from safely getting there anyway, that between the operator and Viator I could get a full refund. But no luck.

I made the right choice for me regardless. Missing your cruise ship hugely compounds a small problem like losing a couple of hundred tour dollars. But for people considering this tour, just be aware that the operator *will* ghost you if you get into any kind of jam.

My plans got impacted literally the night before. I guess one potential lesson is don’t book these more than a couple of days in advance once you are totally sure you can get there, but even that would not have saved my situation.

I’m also surprised Viator, being a big company I have used many times, didn’t just eat the refund given how flukey the situation was. But they didn’t. Oh well. Buyer beware.

Excellent tour!
I would choose this tour every time. Easily accessible and helpful tour guide. This tour allows you to see every level of the colosseum from the underground to the top floor at a leisurely pace, it is not rushed and you are able to absorb everything.
The second part of the tour is just as good and in depth with lots of detailed information regarding the history of Rome. Brilliant way to spend half the day around Rome 😃

I’m sure the experience would have been great “IF” you even get to go on your tour. I got an email the DAY before the tour saying that it was canceled, I called and was given no reason why the tour was canceled and was not given a chance to rebook as the next 3 days I am in Rome are fully booked along with every other tour operator. Terrible customer service and last minute cancelations with this company. Book a more reliable private tour it’s worth the money.

I would give this a 5 but our underground was cancelled about 2 days prior to the tour. That being said, they offered the gladiator forum tour and it was incredible. If you are going to do the coliseum tour I HIGHLY recommend Roman Forum Guided tour - I enjoyed it much more than the coliseum.
