Cinque Terre in Italian means "Five Lands" is a coastal area in the northwest of Italy. It lies in the west of La Spezia, and comprises five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore from north to south.
It is best to leave the car and stay at La Spezia. We can buy the valued Cinque Terre card that cover train travel and hiking fees. It is very convenient to travel to cinque Terre from La Spezia by train. The train is frequent and the 5 villages are very near to La Spezia. We can just hop on and get down to any of the village that we want. Another advantage to stay at La Spezia is that we don’t need to drag our luggage on the undulating terrain in Cinque Terre.
We need at least two days to have a good coverage of this area.
We took the blue trail to travel from Monterosso (northernmost) to Vernazza for about 3km, and from Vernazza to Corniglia for about 4km. Then we can’t continue as landslide has blocked the way. We may be able to get through using ither trail higher up on the mountain. The sceneries of the villages viewed from the walking trail are beautiful. The beauty varies when viewed from different angle. The towns are quaint and there are many restaurants and shops.
In the evening, we booked a boat to sail from village to village. The villages with the mountain as backdrop viewed from the sea is totally different compared to the view from the walking trails. This gives us complete perspective of Cinque Terre. The boat ride took 3 hours.
After Cinque Terre, and when leaving La Spezia, do visit Portovenere about 47km from La Spezia. This town is often considered as the 6th village of Cinque Terre and they are all listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Portovenere is a nice quaint town with a nice century old fortress.
