This tour is organised by I Love Bergen, a locally owned and operated company. Our tours focus not just on the history and highlights of Bergen, but also the off-the-beaten path hidden alleys and stories of everyday life.

The first half of our tour focuses on the history of Bergen. We wander the fortress complex, covering Bergen’s medieval history and short period as the capital of Norway. After this crash course in Norwegian history, we make our way to Bryggen – Bergen’s UNESCO Site. Here you learn about 1,000 years of trade history and the reason for Bergen’s founding and growth.

The second half of our tour is about life in Bergen. We leave the ‘touristy’ part behind and wander into the neighbourhood surrounding Bryggen. As you explore Bergen’s best kept secret, you’ll learn about everyday life. The tour ends by passing by our favourite cafes, restaurants, with recommendations for things to do.

Our group sizes are limited so you can ask questions!

Janine gave a great walking tour of Bergen. She provided a great mix of history and culture. She even offered a taste of stock fish to those brave enough to try it. After walking through the castle and the historic wharf, discussing life there, she took us into the residential area and discussed the life of typical Bergen residents over time. She went out of her way to point out other places of interest and answer quested on where to eat, shop or visit. Highly recommend this tour.

I love the idea of walking tours in a new town, however I find they get bogged down with too much detail and my attention span is challenged.. This tour however was really relaxed informative fun and very well presented. We left with a bounce in our step after the 2 hours with our lovely guide and an understanding of Bergens unique and layered history and what it’s like to live in Bergen today.
