1. Paia
No trip to Maui is complete without a trip to Paia, Maui’s coolest little town. Located on the North Shore, Paia started as a plantation town with the opening of Paia Store in 1896 to serve the needs of the multi-cultural plantation workers of Paia Sugar Mill.
2. Pua'a Ka'a State Park
Pua'a Ka'a State Wayside is a charming and lush stop along the Road to Hana on the island of Maui, Hawaii. This wayside, situated in a rainforest setting, offers a serene escape into nature. Visitors are welcomed by dense vegetation, including towering bamboo groves, vibrant tropical flowers, and thick ferns. One of the main attractions at Pua'a Ka'a is the picturesque waterfall and natural pool. The cascading water creates a tranquil ambiance, inviting visitors to cool off in the refreshing pool or simply enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. The area is often dotted with colorful birds and the soothing sounds of nature.
3. Wai'anapanapa State Park
This stunning beach, located on the eastern coast of Maui, is a result of the gradual erosion of volcanic materials, which has created sand that is black in color. As you explore the beach, you'll be mesmerized by the contrast between the dark sand and the crystal-clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. The high mineral content of the black sand also gives it a subtle sparkle, making it a breathtaking sight.
4. Ke‘anae Point
As a visitor to the area, you'll be awestruck by the majestic Ke'anae Peninsula. This impressive finger of newer lava stretches out from the Hana Highway's cliff line for half a mile. Even before reaching the turnout, you'll catch glimpses of this scenic wonder from various lookouts along the way. Ke'anae is a historically significant village that has been cultivating taro for centuries, and today, much of the land is still used for taro lo'i farming. It's remarkable to think that the soil was brought down here basket by basket, but it's true since the area is made up of young lava rock that was created quite recently (in geological terms) during a massive flow from Haleakala.
5. Ke'anae Arboretum
Located adjacent to the Pi'ina'au Stream, the Ke'anae Arboretum features terraces built by ancient Hawaiians for cultivating taro, which was a staple of their diet. A paved walkway measuring 0.6 miles runs through the arboretum, showcasing a diverse array of timber, fruit, and ornamental trees from different tropical regions of the world, many of which are labeled with nameplates. With over 150 types of tropical plants, including taro, the arboretum is an excellent spot to observe native flowers and marvel at the vibrant bark of rainbow eucalyptus trees.

7. Koki Beach
Koki Beach is a picturesque stop on the Hana tour, known for its striking red and black sand. 8. Venus Pool (Waioka Pond)

9. Ho'okipa Beach Park
As part of our tour, we will make a stop at Ho'okipa beach, one of Maui's most picturesque beaches. It's the perfect place to relax after a long day of exploring the Road to Hana. Aside from swimming and snorkeling, you'll have the chance to spot Hawaiian Green sea turtles, known as honu, that frequent the area. Be sure to keep a respectful distance, as they are protected by federal and state law. The best time to view these amazing creatures is in the evening, when many honu stroll onto the shore to rest and take in the stunning Hawaiian sunset.

We toured with Matt and this 5 star review is for the actual tour with Matt. He was an incredible guide - friendly, knowledgeable, and flexible. Not to mention good with taking pictures. We did the Road to Hana + Haleakalā (which is not an option I’m seeing on their website anymore). Every single stop we did was incredible and it was amazing to learn about the island. We would not have done these activities without a tour and we’re very glad Matt was our guide.

Now, as for the rest of the experience, the worst part was the lack of communication. Emailing Experience Hawaii never resulted in a reply. I had to call to get a reply and even then, the week of our tour, I couldn’t get anybody to answer the phone or call me back from the voicemails I left. The timing on this tour was also off from what was booked to what we did - to clarify, it all worked out but when planning our days, it has an impact. Lastly, the route we booked was changed the morning of when I finally had a chance to ask questions due to road closures that had been there for over 8 months. The tour we got was not what we booked.

This trip was for our honeymoon and instead of paying for a tour that communicated well, we ended up just hoping things would turn out well. Personally, I would book with Matt again without hesitation but I would be weary to book through Experience Hawaii if you value communication, time, and confidence in what the tour details will be. As of this writing, the owner has yet to return my call to talk through any of the above and I’m not surprised.

This was a trip of a lifetime! Our Tour Guides, mother and son, Melissa and Kobe, couldn’t have been more excellent! They knew the history, the geological make up of the area and took us to the most wonderful places that we never would have seen without them. That included a lava Tunnel, the best rotisserie chicken I’ve ever had, jumping off a waterfall into a big pool of natural water and stopping at beaches to look at the sand which is magical.
I couldn’t say enough wonderful things about these fabulous people on this amazing tour!

Spencer did an amazing job as host, tour guide, ukulele playing bard, botanist, biologist, local food expert, and historian. We ate fresh out of the oven banana bread, locally made chocolate, and excellent pizza. He showed us turtles, surfing spots, black sand beaches, red sand beaches, waterfalls, and Charmaine the hairy pig. And to top it off, he jumped off a 50 foot ledge beside a waterfall. A+++++

This was a wonderful tour of the road to Hana with a great tour guide in Melissa. She was very knowledgeable and informative. We had a great time and the private tour allowed us to go at our own pace and do the things we wanted rather than being forced to stick to a set plan. Highly recommend this tour!

Outstanding day with Luke as our guide! He customized our experience to meet the needs of our whole group - two boys ages 12 and 14, parents, and grandparents. Beautiful scenery, lots of Hawaiian green sea turtles, an arboretum walk, and a waterfall adventure. Highly recommend!

Malia was our driver and she was very friendly and informative about Maui, Hawaii and the road to Hana. She kept within our desired time frames (we wanted to be back at our condo at a specific time) and stopped whenever we wanted. She made recommendations on where to stop and what to see, which was very helpful for us. We had considered driving ourselves but were overwhelmed trying figure out where to stop. It is a very long and curvy drive. It’s dangerous to stop if you don’t know where to go or where ro pull over, so it was nice to have someone who knew all that!

Our only disappointment was the vehicle she picked us up in - it was a mid size SUV (we expected a large SUV based on the pic in the ad), and as a family of 4 that meant one of us had to sit in the middle seat on the back bench which was super uncomfortable. Especially with all the twists and turns on the road (nothing to lean against or hold on to).

Other than that, we were very glad to have done the private tour - it was expensive but worth it!

Side note - if you get car sick you may not want to do the whole drive, or make sure you take some Dramamine!

Koby was an awesome guide! He is the BEST! This tour is SOOOO worth the money. I do not like crowds and it was JUST our family and Koby for the day. To have our own tour is great --I don't need to talk to a stranger next to me that I will never see again. I can just spend family time. Our favorite part of the tour was the waterfall!!! We also loved the cave. We had a great time!!! I highly recommend the tour.

Chris provided our family with an excellent tour of the “Road to Hana”! He taught us things about Maui, the culture, and its people that enriched our experience of the island. He had a great plan to help us see & experience the “Road to Hana”, but was open to our interests in what we’d like to see as well.

The trip was full of great things to see and our tour guide John kept us entertained and informed with lots of stories. He recommended Hana Farms for lunch which was some of the best pizza I've ever had
