Journey to the depths of the underworld in this modern retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Follow the musical prodigy Orpheus as he ventures into the dark realm of Hadestown to rescue his beloved Eurydice from the King of the Underworld himself. Their story intertwines with that of Hades and Persephone, whose tumultuous relationship mirrors the changing seasons.
Anaïs Mitchell, a celebrated singer-songwriter, and director Rachel Chavkin have collaborated to turn Mitchell's acclaimed concept album into an innovative musical. This genre-blending production combines modern American folk music with vintage New Orleans jazz to give a fresh perspective on an ancient epic story.

What the hell did we just drag our sorry asses through? Read all the negative reviews of this abomination of mediocrity and please be aware that we are trying to be kind. Strangle this show at birth or throw your money down the drain. Lost for words. Abandon hope, abandon taste, abandon any chance of a good evening. Hadestown gives musical theatre a new dimension, neither musical nor theatrical. Congratulations for having sucked the life out of the genre.

Didn’t know what to expect from this musical as I hadn’t heard of it until looking for a show to see with friends so glad we chose this - the cast were first class as was the band who are on stage for the whole performance. Can’t recommend it enough - funky, funny, and sometimes sad.

My daughter was in theater production at her high school and always wanted to see this play, so while in London we saw it was in the West End. Great cast and story, a love story that has a twist. Highly recommend.

I love a musical and having seen many of the London ones, some more than once, I opted to see Hadestown which I had never seen. The story is very (very!) loosely based on the story of Orpheus and Eurydice but the costumes appear to be from Grapes of Wrath America. The songs are catchy which cannot be said of Hamilton which I did not enjoy. I came away humming a couple of the numbers.
I think the lead character of Orpheus was played by an understudy for the performance I saw and he did not impress - the whole relationship between him and Eurydice did not ring true. The other character who appeared to be played by someone not on the main programme was Hermes, who was billed as being a female actress but was actually being played by a very talented man who was excellent. Hermes acts as a narrator to the story for those not that familiar.

Fantastic musical - performed by a cast who can really sing. Great story (loosely based on myth of Orpheus and Eurydice - you don’t need to know the story to enjoy it!), wonderful stagecraft and a band that rocked the house. Our 12 year old and 17 year old loved it. What an experience - made the trip to London worth it on its own… forget Madame Tussaud’s and see some real stars live!
