Hiking up rainbow mountain was difficult and definitely not for people out of shape but it was a great experience

The only negatives I had were our tour guide asked us for reviews which is cool but then he literally read them right after we gave them. Like you felt pressured to only write good things. Also there was no regular cold water at breakfast or lunch.

Our tour was with Happy Gringo Tours out of Cusco.
Our guide seemed disinterested unless you spoke Spanish. The tour was supposed to begin with pickup at 4:30am and include breakfast, but actually started at 8:30 and once in the minibus we were told that there's no breakfast. ( so I hope that you ate something)
After a long drive without any explanation of the area or history, we arrived at the quad base to drive up the mountain. Our guide led the way up to the landing. We were the last group of the day so there were no vendors or alpacas to have photos with. My husband and I were having difficulty with the altitude and unsteady on our feet so the guide went up to the highest peak with the group and left us to work our way to the lower vantage point. He seemed to be quite rushed.
When we had spent a short time viewing the mountain, we headed back to the quads. On the way down, I wanted to stop to take some photos but was not allowed ( though others were. )
Long story short: Rainbow Mountain is breathtaking...just don't go with Happy Gringo!

Visiting Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain) was absolutely worth it. It is quite a long day, starting at 4:30 a.m. and returning to Cusco around 5:30 p.m., but the day is planned out quite well. The breakfast halfway to the destination was wonderful and filling. The trek up the mountain requires skill and perseverance. One thing I learned about the hike up the mountain - it is worth swallowing one's pride and just taking the horse to trek up the mountain. I am in adequate shape (not great, though), and I had trouble hiking up the mountain. And after the trek was over, the buffet lunch was quite filling. The tour guide was wonderful - providing a great overview and directions and guiding all group members through the trek.

That was our highlight, because it was the first 5000m peak. Vinicunca (5036 m). We started from around 4500 m from the parking lot and yes, you can feel the thinner air. In total, it takes around 1.5 hours to get to the top, then you have to stay at the top for another 1/2 to 1 hour. The colors are magnificent. According to our guide, similar things are only known in Chile and China.
At the top, of course, there are women with alpacas. The positive thing is that there is a toilet and garbage collection at the saddle.
