1. The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities
The Egyptian museum in Cairo houses over 120,000 artifacts, including the contents of Tutankhamen’s tomb and most of the mummies that have been discovered since the 19th century. The museum’s exhibits span from the beginning of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt (approximately 2700 BC) through the Greco-Roman period.The building consists of two floors. On the ground floor, you can follow the history of Egypt from the Old Kingdom up through the Greco-Roman period by turning left at the entrance and looping around the museum. 2. Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary)
The most famous site in Coptic Cairo is the Church of the Virgin Mary, better known by its nickname, the Hanging Church. This name comes from the fact that it was built atop the walls of the 4th century BC Roman fortress of Babylon, the remains of which are still visible about Coptic Cairo Although the effect is significantly diminished today by the fact that the ground level has risen over 30 feet over the centuries due to the accumulation of trash and dust, originally this church towered above its surroundings on the high walls of the fortress.
3. Coptic Cairo
Coptic Cairo is a unique area with Old Cairo that has a concentration of Christian churches and other sites that date from the centuries between the decline of the pharaonic religion and the arrival of Islam when Egypt had a Christian majority. Coptic Cairo is largely built around the fort of Babylon on upon the remains of its walls. The Coptic Museum is here, which holds the largest collection of Coptic Christian artwork and artifacts in the world. Founded in 1910, the museum records Coptic history from the arrival of Christianity in Egypt up through the Ottoman era, displaying a mixture of artwork influenced by Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman traditions.

5. Mosque of Muhammad Ali
However, when Muhammed Ali came to power, he was determined to erase the influence of the Mamluks, who had controlled Egypt for six centuries before him, and demolished their palaces within the fortress. He also built one of Cairo’s most recognizable landmarks. His Alabaster Mosque, built in memory of a deceased son, towers over the rest of the complex. Its silhouette is the most dominant feature of Cairo’s eastern skyline. In addition to these two mosques, the Citadel also contains the National Military Museum, full of uniforms and weapons from Egypt long history, a Police Museum, and several more museums dedicated to the palace of Muhammed Ali.
6. Cairo Citadel
The Citadel looks very different today than it did in its original capacity as a fortress the Crusader armies. It has been expanded and remodeled by many different rulers. In the 14th century, Sultan Al-Nasir Muhammed built a mosque there that still bears his name and the Southern Enclosure of the fort next to Saladin’s original walls. The most noticeable changes came in the 19th century.

Fantastic! We did a half-day tour of old Cairo and the Citadel, having done the Egyptian Museum with Deluxe Tours a few days prior. The reason we came back to Deluxe Tours for a third(!) time was because of our guide, Ebrahim Taye. Ebrahim is an incredible guide with a breath and depth of knowledge that made our visit so much more meaningful and informative. Moreover, he is friendly, welcoming, and went above and beyond to help us with anything we needed at any turn. I could not recommend Deluxe Tours or Ebrahim more highly. Beyond this, the Citadel and mosques themselves were stunning and it was fascinating to see the development of Islamic architecture over a millennium. This was genuinely a highlight of our holiday!

I absolutely LOVED my day with Nevin. She is extremely knowledgeable - an Egyptologist with an abundance of experience in the field. I have also done the Pyramids in the past with her, but decided to focused solely on the Museum and Old City, visiting incredible places filled with history and culture. Thank you very much!!

We had a great time, we saw the most important places in Cairo, the guide Monica was very good, friendly, smiling, with a lot of knowledge of the places, very attentive to all our requests and doubts, she tried very hard to make sure we had a good time! And everything was very well organized. The tour ended almost at 6:30. We had time for everything. Many thanks for everything! We would return happily!!

My husband and I did three tours with Marco because we loved him so much as our tour guide! He was so knowledgeable about everything we could’ve wanted to know about ancient Egypt and all of Egyptian history.
Marco knows everyone at the tourist sites and can get you into all these unique places that you can’t get to alone or with another tour guide. He is truly unique and our time with him was so special. We will always remember him and our trip in Egypt because of his kindness and guidance.
We also worked with our driver Muhamed for all three tours. He got us everywhere super safely and promptly and was just so kind the whole time. He made our experience very comfortable and nice with his great smile. 😊

What a fantastic day in Old Cairo. My guide Marco and driver Mohammed Ali were excellent. Marco listened very closely to my wishes and crafted a perfect day covering Christian and Islamic sites as well as the museum of civilization. I will definitely be booking another tour next time I am in Cairo.

He was very flexible and made sure he answered all our questions patiently . He also made sure we had good dinner !!! This was a really interesting tour, the Churches had a lot of history and it was great to see Old Cairo not just Giza. The Civilisation museum was also very impressive. A highlight was definitely seeing Ramses II and Seti I mummies!

Our amazing tour guide Marco organised a wonderful lunch at Abou Tarek who specialise in the national Egyptian dish which was delicious. He made the whole day go so smoothly and completely hassle free. Can’t recommend him enough, he is so knowledgeable about all the sites and facilitated a wonderful, fun, in depth tour of a lesser visited part of Egypt.

5/5! We got Marko (tour guide) and Badr (driver) for this trip. They didn’t give us a hard time and they were very helpful every step of the way. Marko was very knowledgeable regarding Egyptology and Badr was always on time whenever we had to go to the next stop. Highly recommended!!
