Speedboat Whale Watching Small-Group Tour in Reykjavik

We had some of the most inspiring moments of our trip on this boat. We saw many dolphins, a whale, and puffins. The guide gave us an incredible glimpse into the ocean world with his knowledge, and I felt very safe with such an experienced driver. It was an unbelievably beautiful experience.

10 out of 10 We had the most epic time seven girlfriends on their first day in Iceland from America. Carol and Yoda made it absolutely magical. We had a once in a lifetime opportunity to see two whales and a pod of dolphins frolicking and playing. They know how to find whales, explain to what you’re seeing and make the trip an all around unforgettable Iceland moment.

This was a great trip in nearly every way - being in a small group means that everyone has good visibility, and the fast rib means that any 'leads' on wildlife can be responded to quickly. We saw some dolphins, a minke whale dorsal fin and lots of cute puffins.

On the way out, we got a thrill from the speed of the boat and the suspension seats were enough to deal with the bumps if you braced with your knees. On the way back, possibly against the wind (?), the bumping was really uncomfortable - every few moments, we would hit a wave that caused it to feel like the boat was crashing you down onto concrete repeatedly - my teenage son and I were both in pain the next day from the pressure on knee and back joints (despite no prior issues). I would strongly recommend that if you have pre-existing conditions or are pregnant, you follow the advice not to take a rib tour. The last half hour, we just wanted to go back to shore.

Overall, we would recommend Katla as a company and recommend a small group tour like this - just be mindful of the fact it can be a very bumpy ride.

Unfortunately this was cancelled due to weather. Twice. I know this can’t be helped but that was the point of us going in June. I feel I’ve had a wasted trip to Iceland as this was the main reason for coming.

Myself and my 11 year old did this tour. It was professional and slick with wet suits, life preservers and even googles and snoods to guard against the wind. The Journey out was as much of a sensation as the actual whale watching, it was incredible to bounce along over the waves at high speed. We saw Minke and Humpback whales and because we were in a small boat we were able to float far closer than the whale watching ships and cover distance fast when a whale appeared. This is by far the best whalecwatching experience I have ever had, it was utterly amazing to see these incredible animals so close in their natural environment.

The boat being just 12 people makes it a much better way to get closer to the whales and dolphins. Excellent waterproof and warm weather gear provided as well.

We saw some dolphins and possibly a whale at distance. And a few porpoises at distance. Kind of disappointing for the cost and effort.
