Fantastic and authentic experience. This is a must for anyone remotely interested in a glimpse into authentic Māori culture and way of life. No part of this tour is exploitive or inconsiderate. It is led and curated by the Māori tribespeople that live in TeWhakarewarewa Village and is both informative and thoroughly fascinating. I believe this is a very important experience for anyone looking to gain a glimpse into the history, culture and way of life of one of New Zealand’s indigenous peoples. Thank you to everyone there for sharing your knowledge and customs with us. I loved participating in the Haka!

The guided tour was very informative of cultural customs and translations of the Maori language.
Our guide Wiamaria was super friendly and proud to be able to share her family heritage.
The self guided walk was an amazing experience.
Would highly recommend putting this in the top 5 things to do in Rotorua.

Our tour guide Daniel was terrific - dynamic, engaging, and incredibly informative about Maori history, traditions, and daily life. The tour was 1 hour which was the perfect length. We also watched the cultural performance, which was wonderful - this was an additional cost but well worth it.

A definite must-do in Rotorua! It did not feel like a tourist trap, but rather a genuine and authentic exercise in preserving the Māori legacy and way of life.

Spent the morning there: 9.45am to 1pm
Combo tour includes the guided village tour (1h) and geothermal trail (1h+ with time for pics). Paid a little extra (well worth it!!) for the cultural performance (30 min). Would definitely have bought the full day pass in retrospect.
Guided village tour:
Our 10am group was small, so we were lucky to have an intimate tour with our passionate, knowledgeable and charismatic guide Kylie. Her love and connection to her people, values and traditions was apparent and infectious.
Geothermal trail:
Really felt like walking through Jurassic Park. Stunning lake view with lots of great photo ops.
Cultural performance:
10/10. Aside from the performance itself (which was fun and energetic), we could experience firsthand the warm community feeling and connection just by watching the interactions between the talented performers.
Overall:
It was an invaluable and unique experience to be welcomed into the Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao people's home, experience their hospitality firsthand and witness such beautiful views along the walking trail. Everyone was warm and friendly, from Shayne at reception to all the people and kids we came across in the village. Would definitely visit again. Thank you for welcoming us into your home! <3

Authentic, informative and the guide was lovely, plus included the whole tour group in the experience. This is a very old tour, going since the 1960’s, and includes a lot of history of the site and the people who live there. It is not tired, more genuine of the historical significance.

We had a very interesting tour of Whaka by a local resident. He had many stories to tell us of growing up in Whaka and living in the community still. He was very open to questions. We learned alot about how people live in such a geothermally active area.
We did go on the trail hikes after our tour. A great experience.

A wonderful experience, we had a guided tour of the village, our guide was knowledgeable and you could tell he had a lot of love in her heart for the village and her history as she took us around.
We were even treated to some freshly cooked corn boiled in the pool!
All in all, one of my favourite experiences in Auckland

We did the guided tour, cultural show, and self-guided trails. All were brilliant! Our tour guide, Miriama, was amazing. We could really feel the love she has for the village and her family, her culture. We learned so much from her. Being visitors to New Zealand, we really wanted to learn more about the Māoris and their culture, and Whakarewarewa was a great place to do that. The self-guided tour of the geothermal area was wonderful too; it was really sunny when we went and everything was so beautiful!

Great immersion into Whakarewarewa Village past, present and future. Performers, tour guide as well as other community members met on site conveyed authenticity and were inclusive of visitors. I really enjoyed the self-guided walk as a way to reflect and absorb what Nature had to offer, including a vintage point on Pōhutu Geyser. Thank you for having me!
