Admire the richness of the African heritage in Brazil. Visit the remains of an important part of Brazilian history.
Starting with hotel pickup, we head to a place called Little Africa. The Little Africa was the entrance point in Rio for several men, women and children coming from the African continent. It is a large zone that used to have a slave open market, stores, houses and graveyards. Walk through the alleys and pay attention to the remarks made by the tour guide. Learn Brazilian history by visiting each historical place. Most people get emotional during the tour. Be respectful and enjoy this rich cultural adventure.
At the end, we take you back to the hotel.

Monica is an experienced and knowledgeable guide. She made this tour focusing on the tragic history of enslavement in Brazil. This included the UNESCO heritage site of the pier where thousands of human beings were unloade6. it had been covered over and forgotten until 2011. The small African heritage museum and Afro- Brazilian cultural center were also interesting. The historic neighborhood of Little Africs was another stop. We could see this old low income area faces gentrification. Monica was very responsive to two older travelers and adjusted the pace. She even added brief stops at additional sites. A great opportunity to get off the beaten path and learn about multi cultural, multi-racial Brazil. Definitely worth the cost.

We toured with Antonio yesterday and was very disappointed. Our tour was confirmed with pickup from hotel but was later told that hotel pickup was unavailable and my group of 3 had to meet guide at another hotel. When we met Antonio we were disappointed to learn that his English was not great so it was hard understanding him. We departed the pickup spot in a small vehicle so we were cramped. We walked around took photos but had to take a taxi twice that we had to pay additional for. After the tour Antonio told us to meet him at a spot on coco cabana beach to see a Samba dancer. When we arrived there was no samba dancers and we got stuck paying for his meal and drinks. I wouldn’t recommend Antonio as a guide for English speaking travelers. Larger vehicle for transport is needed if you have 3 people in group (4 including guide). 3 adults sitting in back seats will be cramped.

We completed a 4 hour walking tour of Little Africa in Rio with our wonderful guide Monica. We enjoyed every aspect of the walking tour. We saw many sights related to Rio's dark history of colonisation and at every stop Monica gave us detailed, interesting and shocking facts and information. We were enthralled throughout. Monica is very friendly and her enthusiasm, personality and passion for history shone through the whole tour. You will not regret booking this tour. Thank you Monica, it was one of the highlights of our Rio stay.
