The Alkmaar Cheese Market is the oldest and largest in the Netherlands. Since 1365, Alkmaar has had one cheese scale, and by 1612, the city had as many as four cheese scales. Even the Waagplein, where the cheese market has been held since its inception, has been expanded several times. The next stop is the Zaanse Schans. Here are special windmills such as the paint windmill, the sawmill, spices mill and peanut oil mill. Thereafter you will see a wooden shoe demonstration and there is a possibility to buy clogs/wooden shoes and other nice souvenirs.
