Bali's spiritual heartland is a world away from the island's main resorts. Expect art galleries, sprawling markets and holy spring waters.
First up are Ubud's must-see galleries, housing collections from both Balinese and international artists. After, you'll have free time to explore the local market. Browse the many stalls selling Balinese handicrafts and textiles. Then we'll take a scenic route past the Tegallalang rice fields to Tampaksiring, where we'll discover one of Bali's largest ancient temples - Gunung Kawi. Built on a natural spring, the 11th-century water temple has been used for purification rituals for many years. Be stunned by its collection of ‘candi' – Balinese rock-cut shrines.
On the way back, we'll stop at Batuan village to see a traditional house. Cap off the tour with a visit to Tohpati, an art and craft village famous for ‘batik'. You'll see the traditional form of painting fabrics using dots and lines from wax in action.
