St Andrews Walking Tours

St Andrews Walking Tours

Award-winning walking tours of St Andrews with noted guide, author and historical researcher Richard Falconer. St Andrews is one of the most unique and surprising locations in the world. It is no secret that St Andrews is a sought-after destination, being the Home of Golf and incorporating Scotland's first University, but there has been a vibrancy here for well over 1000 years. It culminated in the rise and fall of the Cathedral precincts, symbolic of the greatest seat of Catholic power outside Rome itself in Europe for over 400 years - and the treasures they housed may still be here! You will hear about the formation of St Andrews, the university and Royalty through the ages from Pictish Kings to Mary Queen of Scots and Prince William. You will also hear all about golf at the Old Course. It is fair to say St Andrews has it all, and you will find out all about it on this informative and thought-provoking tour as you wander through its iconic historic precincts.

First, we pass by around Dunvegan Castle and see the pretty flowers and plants in the gardens. The castle has a lot of history. Then, you can go to Claigan Coral Beach. It's a beach with white sand that looks like coral. It's a nice place for a walk. Next, you can visit the famous Neist Point Lighthouse. It stands on the edge of the sea and is a good place to take pictures. If you like whisky, you can try some at the Talisker Distillery. They make the drink there and can tell you how it's made. The Cuillin Mountains are very big and are a beautiful part of Skye. You can also go to the Fairy Pools, which are small waterfalls and pools of clear water that look like they come from a fairy tale. Lastly, there's an old bridge called the Sligachan Bridge. The Merchant City: A Self Guided Audio Tour of Glasgow

The Merchant City: A Self Guided Audio Tour of Glasgow

Experience the magic of GPS on this self-guided walking tour through Glasgow. Three hundred years ago the wider Glasgow area was mostly countryside, with the Cathedral at its centre. The city began to change in the 1500s when Scotland became a Protestant country. Lucrative pilgrimages to Glasgow that had long been made by Roman Catholics ended, replaced by tobacco from America. You’ll hear how Glasgow went from surviving to thriving, transitioning from the tobacco trade to cotton and, later, heavy engineering to eventually become the burgeoning ‘Second City’ of the Empire. How did these merchants become wealthy beyond our imaginings? Slavery. We’ll explore Glasgow’s roles in slavery and its abolition while we walk the streets of the Merchant City district, discovering how the city developed from the 1600s until today. Everywhere you turn, from George Square to the Royal Exchange Square, you’ll encounter the wealth of Glasgow’s merchants written in stone.
