The Australian Capital Territory or ACT as it is referred to by the locals, has certainly had its fair share of names. It was originally known as The Territory for the Seat of Government, and then a bit later on down the track was known as the Federal Capital Territory.
These days the vast majority of Australians just simply call it Canberra, which is the capital city of the nation's capital.
The state of New South Wales completely land locks the ACT. The actual Territory itself is tiny and only takes up 2,280 square kilometres of land and is home to just over 370,000 people. The ACT is also known as Australia's Political Capital. Generally speaking the main occupations of people that live in the ACT are either politicians, public servants or Defence personnel. The Australian Department of Defence also has a very large presence in the Australian Capital Territory, and the Royal Australian Defence Force Academy Duntroon is located there.
There is definitely no shortage of things to see and do in the ACT. From the Australian War Memorial, Black Mountain, National Dinosaur Museum or watching coins being made at the Royal Australian Mint, there's something for everyone.
