Devonport is the third largest city in Tasmania, and home to around 25,000 people. It is located smack bang in the middle of the island's north coast. Devonport is more a harbour port than anything else. Home to the Bass Straight Spirit of Tasmania ferries, the ferry terminal services a huge amount of tourists that have boarded in Melbourne and made the journey across the Strait.
Every morning, and then at nights during the summer, you will see the Spirit of Tasmania ferries arrive into the mouth of the Mersey river blasting its deafening air horns three times, before docking and letting its passengers and their vehicles off. Devonport serves as the major regional centre for the north western part of the island.
In all honesty Devonport has more family based activities and attractions. Some of the top things to see and do are the Australian Weaving Mills, the Bass Strait Maritime Museum, Simon Martin Whips & Leathercraft, the Don Railway, and the Tasmanian Arboretum.
