Botswana, or going by its official name the Republic of Botswana, is a located in Southern Africa. Botswana was formerly known as the British protectorate of Bechuanaland. However, after becoming independent within the Commonwealth in 1966, Botswana adopted its new name.
Over 70 percent of Botswana is consumed by the Kalahari Desert, geographically it is a very flat landmass. Zimbabwe borders Botswana to the northeast, South Africa to the south and southeast, Namibia to the west and north, and Zambia also to the north. Botswana is one of the most sparsely populated nations in the world, and is considered to be a mid-sized country with a population of just over two million people. The capital and largest city, Gaborone is home to approximately 10 percent of the population.
