The airport was officially opened in 1940, and later became New Zealand's first international airport in 1950. The airport is the second busiest in the country, as is alongside Auckland Airport are the only two airports able to safely land the larger Boeing and Airbus aircraft that service the region. The airport has also undergone a 200 odd million dollar refurbishment.
As Christchurch is often buffeted by winds from the north east and the south east, it has two runways that are perpendicular to each other. There is also a much smaller third runway which is grassed, and only used by small light aircraft.
There are 18 domestic and 11 international services that are operated out of the Christchurch Airport. The single terminal building is used for both international and domestic purposes.
