Opened in 1965, the Faro Airport or if you prefer to pronounce it in Portugese, Aeroporto Internacional de Faro is located only 4 kilometres to the west of the city of Faro. The airport is also known as Algarve Airport. It has a single runway, and has an IATA reference of FAO.
During the summer months the airport becomes extremely busy. It has a total of 22 aircraft bays, with 36 boarding and arrival gates, and 60 check in desks. Well over 5 million people traverse through the airport every year.
The airport has been through two major refurbishments in 1989 and 2001, and in 2010 the airport became a major hub for the aircraft carrier Ryanair.
There are well over a dozen retail stores within the airport, and about a dozen eateries and bars. The airport also has a range of exhibitions that are refreshed periodically.
