The United Republic of Tanzania as it is officially known, but Tanzania to the rest of us is a country in East Africa in the African Great Lakes region with over 45 million inhabitants.
Bordering Uganda and Kenya to the north, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and to the west and Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia to the south, Tanzanias eastern border is formed by the Indian Ocean.
Tanzania is also home to Africas highest mountain Mount Kilimanjaro to the north east. Dodoma has been the official capital of Tanzania since 1996, and is where the National Assembly and some government offices are located. However the coastal city of Dar es Salaam has served as the countrys political capital, and is also Tanzanias largest city with over 4.3 million residents. Dar es Salaam is also the principal port of the country.
Tanzania only came into existence in 1964 when Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar and only a short time later was renamed to the United Republic of Tanzania.
